The orthopaedic ward is in a state of chaos. The doctor is in a frenzied state. The nurses are short of time. The ward beds are almost full. The senior nurse claims, “I should have 5 pairs of hands and legs to work today”. She confronts the Matron and the administrator for the allotment of more staff in her ward. On listening to the nurse, the Matron recommends the matter to the Administrator. Considering the matter, the administrator shares with the Matron on the previous occupancy data. The occupancy has been fluctuating from 60 – 75% in the normal days and 90% during the peak time. Based on these data, it is observed that only 1.5% times, the occupancy is beyond 75% in the last 8 months. Hence, the administrator concluded that the ward is well staffed to handle 75% occupancy, which is enough to justify the non-requirement of extra beds or extra staff. Collection of data with a pictorial and comparison representation enables to take informed decisions at the flick of a button, only due to the new technology in HIMS.


Hand held device intergration


The hospital ICU has 15 beds. With an efficient centralized monitoring system, the hospital can trace the patient status 24/7. High profiled Intensive Care Therapists have provided their expertise in setting parameters that are critical and indicate patient emergency. Suddenly, the bed # 4 patient enters into Ventricular Arrhythmia. An emergency alarm is set on immediately; signalling the hospital staff to attend the emergency. Simultaneously, an SMS alert is sent to the patient’s consultant Mobile phone. The message contains the patientdata and the nature of emergency. Immediately, the consultant synchronizes his PDA with the HIMS to access the patient data through the Internet. Updates the prescriptions based on the patient’s condition with a quick advise on the next line of action. Synchronizes the data back to HIMS. The consultant decides on a physical visit to the patient, based on the patient data.
